If it ain’t broken … break it!
My T40 is my main system when it comes to working for IBM. It’s got all my enterprise software, my documents, authoring and support applications … everything! So why is it that every time things are going smoothly and there are no (technical) problems in sight, I have to try something stupid… don’t underestimate the power of the geek side.
As I’m writing this entry on my Mac, I’m installing on my work Thinkpad a program called FlyAKiteOSX, which I’m sure some of you know. I’ve tried it in the past and removed it after a while, although I can’t remember why, so here I am trying it again – it’s a different version than last time.
In essence, it’s a package that includes a bunch of hacks designed to make any Windows XP system look and behave like OS X. Hacks is the operative word here.
Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it!
And so, because I don’t have a way to track why I uninstall stuff (as I often do), I’m going through the process again. It could be that I’m a speed freak and the response time was too slow, or that it didn’t work well with an application I use all the time – oh well…The installation seems to be hanging… humm… not good. Oh! Some disk activity… there’s hope… nope. It’s stalled all right. Ok. Killing it w/ Task Manager. And trying to run the installation again. Oh? It says it’s already installed. Oh well, doing it again can’t hurt. It’s gone through the end now, I’ll reboot as it suggests. The log-on comes on after a little longer than usual, now the desktop. All seems fine. For now.
Having a real Mac to compare with, I can say that the UI change is quite nice. It’s refreshing to see a familiar OS on my Thinkpad. Rebooting again. Now I get the modified boot-up screens and login. Nice touch. I think I’ll play a little with this, given that I’ve got a system Restore Point if the worst should happen.
