Why OS X rules for me

Maybe it’s because it’s so darn easy to connect peripherals and use them?

As I write this, I have an external 160Gb Firewire drive, a USB Scanner, a USB Hub, a USB printer, a Treo 650, a WiFi Speaker set, a USB lamp, a Sony Digital8 Firewire camcorder, a Canon G1 camera and probably a couple more goodies in my desk drawers. And it just works…

Or maybe it’s because it never crashes or needs reboots all the time?

Here’s a screen capture of a widget (iStat) showing a few stats and my uptime…. 19 days! And the machine runs 24/7, and sees all kind of action, not just Mail/Safari stuff. We’re talking video encoding, web development, photo editing, torrent/ftp transfers, personal finance, chat, DVD burning, etc.

Or maybe it’s the way it multitasks with so much ease?

Right now, there are 3 users logged in on my iMac (me, my wife and my daughter). There’s enough RAM for all of us, and I don’t feel any sluggyness as I use my larger apps to get real work done.

Or just maybe, it’s because it’s also a *nix machine?

Having a real terminal I can ssh, svn, grep and basically hack the hell out of is really useful. A quick tar zcvf and I’ve got a nice backup before making changes. And I hven’t even started playing with rsync yet, for which I’ve read a lot of good stuff. Yeah, I still love my mac. And like most users out there, I’m saving for the next one…
