Mambo was nice, but it’s over…

After having wasted so many hours making my family website look good, I’ve decided I had enough with the clunky user interface that Mambo offers. I mean, the stupid rich-text editor wouldn’t work consistently across platforms, it would blink non-stop, and using other editors proved to be major pains. The fact that the development is currently halted, and that a new codebase will emerge from Joomla was the last straw.

After compiling an exhaustive list of what my family & friends want from our website (#1: pictures, #2: news, #3: there is no #3), I’m sticking to basics and will move everything to WordPress for news (blogging) and Gallery2 for pictures. I was already running Gallery 1.5, but the integration was clunky. Now, with WPG2, we have a tight coupling and some themes that actually look decent.

To complement the solution, I’ve found an iPhotoToGallery2 plugin for iPhoto, and I’ve just found a script that will export all my 100+ entries from Mambo into WordPress. I’d say the whole process of downloading, installing and configuring took about 2 hours. Migrating pictures and journal entries from my previous website took about 10 minutes!

I’ll need to finalize a few things like .htaccess rules and so on, but it’s essentially done and should go live in a day or two.’, ‘After having wasted so many hours making my family website look good, I’ve decided I had enough with the clunky user interface that Mambo offers.
